**About the Position:**This Oiler Deckhand position is with the New York District, Operations Division, Physical Support Branch located in Jersey City, Hudson County, New Jersey.

### Responsibilities
Serves as Oiler Deckhand aboard powered vessels displacing up to 500 tons engaged in waterway maintenance. Primary duty is in the engine room with secondary duty as deckhand when needed. Oils and greases diesel engines, electric motors, generators, pumps, bearings, gears, shafts, and other machinery and equipment aboard the vessel. Under direction of Master, Assistant Master, Chief Engineer or First Assistant Engineer operates main and auxiliary engines and auxiliary equipment including pumps, generators, air compressors, and other machinery such as crane engines and winches including all deck equipment. Assists in making any general repairs aboard the vessel, including repairs to machinery and equipment. During the lay-up periods may assist higher graded crew members with repairs and the overhauling of equipment and machinery. Performs general vessel maintenance duties and keeps boat in ship-shape condition. Maintains, repairs, cleans, and paints the deck, hull, super-structure, and storage areas. When required, handles mooring lines when docking, fastening lines to mooring post or to towing bitts and over deck and dock bollards. Splices and cares for manila and wire rope, makes hitches, rope fenders, etc. and performs light rigging.

### Qualifications
In order to qualify, you must meet the requirements described below. Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religious; spiritual; community; student; social). You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience. Your resume must clearly describe your relevant experience; if qualifying based on education, your transcripts will be required as part of your application. Minimum Qualifications (Screen Out Element): Ability to do the work of an Oiler Deckhand without more than normal supervision.
Maintaining diesel engines, electric motors, generators, pumps and other shipboard machineries; operating engines and equipment to include pumps, generators, and air compressors; operating other machinery such as crane engines, winches and all deck equipment; assisting with general engine and machinery repairs aboard the vessel; performing general vessel maintenance duties; handling mooring lines when docking, fastening lines to mooring post or to towing bitts and over deck and dock bollards.
Physical Effort: Moderately heavy physical effort is required in lifting and carrying objects weighing up to 45 pounds and in working in stretched and cramped positions.
Working Conditions: Works both inside and outside during a variety of weather conditions and climates, including extremes of heat and cold and heavy rainfall. There is a danger of slipping from floating plant into water with possibility of physical injury or drowning. On-shore work may involve working in mud, snow, or ice in dirty or cramped situations.
Specialized Placement Factors:
1) Possess a valid Transportation Worker Identification Credential (TWIC).
2) Possess a valid Qualified Member of the Engine Department (QMED) - Oiler Endorsement. (QMED must be obtained within 14 months of being hired)
3) Must have worked on vessels/floating plants.
4) Possess a valid Merchant Marine Credential for Ordinary Seaman/Wiper.
